Amenities Plus

The donation drop-off for Hotel Amenities takes place several times a year. The need among Johnson City’s homeless population and working poor is great, and in many cases, it has been exacerbated by the pandemic.  To help with the basic needs of our neighbors, we are beginning to think about warm-weather clothing, but continue to seek donations of coats, warm hats and scarves, gloves, chemical hand warmers, men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, boots, rain gear, blankets, backpacks, sleeping bags, tarps, tents, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, razors, lotion, feminine hygiene products, lip balm, tissue packets, cough drops, laundry detergent, bleach, bottled water, snacks, coffee, and don’t forget to gather up the hotel amenities as you resume your travels! We also collect donations for Family Promise. Some items go directly to families that are being served by Family Promise, while other items are sold in the Family Promise re-sale store. Proceeds from the store go to help homeless families get back on their feet. Anything that you might generally donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army can be donated to Family Promise.

School Supplies Drive

Every July, the parish collects school supplies for high-need public schools in Johnson City and Washington County.  Schools are selected based on their Title I status and the percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.  Usually, two schools are chosen, and all donated supplies are donated equally between the two schools.

Any questions may be directed to office@stjohnstn.org.

Community Partners

global inititative

Global Initiatives

Every year, the children of St. John’s raise money during the season of Advent to purchase a  Christmas gift from Heifer International. This organization works to empower farmers throughout the developing world, with gifts of animals, seeds, or water or electricity projects, along with education in best care practices for that farmer’s region.
The children select a gift from the Heifer Project calendar and solicit donations throughout December, with bake sales and special music offerings in addition to requests for direct donations. Every year, the students and the whole congregation enjoy this tangible sending God’s love out into the world!
melting pot

Melting Pot

In early 1990, following the tragic fire at the John Sevier Center on Christmas Eve 1989, Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church began the Melting Pot.  In the beginning, Sunday School classes from Munsey provided the Shepherd’s Breakfast on Saturdays.  Years later, Good Samaritan Ministries adopted the idea to serve lunch daily.  The whole community has been together ever since!

Today, breakfast is available six days a week and lunch is served five days a week. The meals are prepared for the homeless, the elderly, and/or homebound persons who have no resources to prepare a meal for themselves.

Area churches have signed up for preparing and serving meals on certain days of the month. St. John’s prepares and serves the noon meal on the 5th Thursday of those months that have five weeks.
